Fetal, Perinatal, and Pediatric Autopsy

Understanding Loss, Protecting the Future

The death of a fetus, infant, or child raises profound medical and emotional questions. Fetal, perinatal, and pediatric autopsies are specialized examinations focused on understanding how and why death occurred, while also assessing potential risks to future pregnancies and family members.

These examinations are performed by specialists experienced in fetal, neonatal, and pediatric pathology and may include comprehensive autopsy, detailed placental examination, and targeted histologic analysis. Particular attention is given to developmental abnormalities, genetic or metabolic conditions, placental pathology, and disease processes unique to early life.

The goal of these examinations is not blame, but understanding—providing families and clinicians with clear medical explanations and, when possible, information relevant to future family planning and health.

To ensure access to these services, the fetal, perinatal, and pediatric autopsy program is subsidized through an internal grant. Depending on the circumstances and scope of the examination, services may be provided at no cost or for a nominal fee. Eligibility and fees are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Every examination is conducted with sensitivity, respect, and a commitment to careful, compassionate communication.
